Psychologia na Uniwersytecie im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu ma ponad 100 letnią tradycję i jest rozpoznawana w Polsce jako mająca własne podejście metodologiczne, kliniczne i rozwojowo-wychowawcze. Obecnie na Wydziale Psychologii i Kognitywistyki rozwijane są także badania w nowych obszarach: seksuologii, psychologii społecznej, psychologii zdrowia i choroby, psychologii pracy i organizacji, neuronauki.

Studia psychologiczne prowadzone na Wydziale Psychologii i Kognitywistyki są ugruntowane w poznańskiej tradycji badawczej. Są kierunkiem o ogólnoakademickim profilu kształcenia, a więc którego program jest ściśle powiązany z badaniami naukowymi w dyscyplinie. Osoby studiujące mają możliwość kształcenia się pod opieką uprawiających na co dzień naukę i uczestniczyć w prowadzonej na wydziale działalności badawczej. Wielu spośród nauczycieli i nauczycielek posiada ponadto uprawnienia zawodowe i certyfikaty z zakresu diagnozy i pomocy psychologicznej (specjalizacje, certyfikaty psychoterapeutyczne i superwizorskie). Ich kompetencje praktyczne wykorzystywane są w toku zajęć specjalistycznych.

W toku kształcenia studiujący zdobywają wiedzę z zakresu psychologii ogólnej (poznawczej, emocji i motywacji, osobowości, różnic indywidualnych, społecznej i psychologii rozwoju), metodologii badań (metodologii ze statystyką, psychometrii i diagnozy psychologicznej), biologicznych mechanizmów zachowania i psychopatologii. Rozwijają ponadto umiejętności społeczne wymagane do udzielania wsparcia w sytuacjach krytycznych, prewencji i profilaktyki patologii społecznej, negocjacji, mediacji i rozwiązywania konfliktów międzygrupowych, badań selekcyjnych i działań psychoedukacyjnych. Po opanowaniu w pierwszej kolejności podstaw wiedzy i kompetencji psychologicznych, w dalszej części kształcenia poznają podstawy teoretyczne dwóch wybranych dziedzin psychologii stosowanej (psychologii klinicznej, pracy i organizacji, edukacji, społecznej) i dwóch korespondujących z nimi szczegółowych specjalności. Treści drugiej część kształcenia zależne są od indywidualnych wyborów osoby studiującej, pozwalających na rozwój jej indywidualnego profilu zawodowego.

Trzeci etap (4 i 5 rok) przeznaczony jest na naukę w ramach przedmiotów z modułu specjalnościowego oraz do wyboru a także własną pracę badawczą w ramach seminarium magisterskiego. Realizowany jest także ostatni kierunkowy przedmiot obligatoryjny - etyka zawodu psychologa.

Wyborowi studiujących podlegają dwie specjalności, które są kontynuacją wybranych w semestrze 8. oraz jedne ćwiczenia terenowe w ramach dwóch specjalności wybranych wcześniej.
