Kierunek Administracja wpisuje się w kilkudziesięcioletnią tradycję studiów administracyjnych na Wydziale Prawa i Administracji UAM. Studia te powstały 60 lat temu, kiedy to na podstawie zarządzenia Ministra Szkolnictwa Wyższego z dnia 8 czerwca 1960 r. utworzono Zawodowe Studium Administracji; stacjonarne studia administracyjne zaczęły funkcjonować cztery lata później. W latach 70. ub. wieku formy studiów administracyjnych znacznie rozbudowano, szczególnym jednak powodzeniem studia te cieszyły się na przełomie lat 90. i dwutysięcznych; bywało, że na samym tylko pierwszym roku studiowało aż 779 osób (rok akademicki 1997/1998).

Kierunek Administracja prowadzony jest obecnie – zgodnie z Deklaracją Bolońską – dwupoziomowo (3-letnie studia licencjackie i 2-letnie uzupełniające magisterskie), dla studentów dziennych i zaocznych. Studia administracyjne cieszą się dużym zainteresowaniem kandydatów na studentów, których liczba zazwyczaj znacznie przekracza liczbę dostępnych miejsc, co stanowi bardzo duże osiągnięcie, z uwagi na ogromną konkurencję ze strony kierunków Administracja, prowadzonych na uczelniach prywatnych. Opisywany kierunek stanowi – razem z kierunkiem Prawo –istotę wydziału, co wynika choćby z jego nazwy – Wydział Prawa i Administracji.

Warto dodać, że kierunek Administracja jest od wielu lat doceniany w zakresie potencjału naukowego i dydaktycznego – m.in. konsekwentnie zajmuje czołowe miejsca w Rankingu Najlepszych Kierunków Studiów miesięcznika „Perspektywy”.
