Teologia jest nauką usytuowaną w dziedzinie nauki teologiczne. Jej przedmiotem jest refleksja naukowa nad prawdami objawionymi zgodnie z łacińską maksymą fides quaerens intellectum (wiara szukająca zrozumienia). Jest więc teologia z jednej strony nauką o Bogu i Jego relacji do człowieka i całego świata, z drugiej zaś strony jest to nauka o człowieku i jego odniesieniu do Boga i stworzonego przez Niego świata. Studiowanie na tym kierunku wymaga zatem podstawowej wiedzy na temat chrześcijaństwa i jego obecności w świecie, a także historii i nauki o społeczeństwie. Opracowując cele, efekty uczenia i treści kształcenia na kierunku teologia wzięto pod uwagę: 1.rozwój nauk teologicznych ze szczególnym zainteresowaniem antropologią; 2. potrzeby i zadania Kościoła katolickiego i innych wspólnot chrześcijańskich w świecie; 3. postępujący proces dechrystianizacji i dehumanizacji świata; 3. marginalizację nauk humanistycznych i teologicznych; 4. narastające problemy społeczne, w tym religijne i rasowe. W związku z tym w ramach studiów znajdują się przedmioty nie tylko z zakresu teologii, ale także filozofii, antropologii, psychologii, dialogu ekumenicznego i międzyreligijnego. W ramach studiów niestacjonarnych na kierunku teologia realizowane są dwie specjalności: katechetyczno-pastoralna (przeznaczona przede wszystkim dla studentów, którzy w przyszłości pragną podjąć pracę w zawodzie katechety i szkolnego nauczyciela religii), teologii biblijnej i praktycznej (przeznaczona dla studentów, którzy w przyszłości podejmą pracę jako liderzy grup parafialnych i jako asystenci pastoralni działający w różnych instytucjach o charakterze społecznym).
