Major Teaching English

The Teaching English program constitutes an important complement to the educational offer of the Faculty of English, focusing on the training of future and practicing English language teachers at the master’s level. The program falls within the humanities, in the discipline of linguistics, with particular emphasis on applied linguistics. Its aim is to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, and social competences that characterize of a modern English language teacher prepared to work in a diverse, contemporary educational context.

The curriculum includes two specialization tracks, corresponding to the different needs and motivations of candidates.

Specialization: Professional training of English language teachers

The curriculum of this specialization includes content compliant with the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 25 July 2019 on the standards of education preparing students for the teaching profession. The offer is intended for graduates of philological and linguistic programs in English who did not complete the teacher‑training standard during their first‑cycle studies or completed it only partially. Upon graduation, students obtain qualifications to teach English in the Polish education system in grades 4-8 of primary school and in secondary schools.

Specialization: Professional development of English language teachers

The curriculum of this track enables English language teachers to broaden and deepen their subject‑matter preparation, although it does not confer the legally required qualifications to work as a teacher in the school system. It is suitable for graduates of philological and linguistic programs in English who have already completed the teacher‑training standard compliant with the Ministerial regulation and wish to further develop their knowledge and skills in English language teaching at Master’s level. It is also appropriate for candidates who have not completed the standard but are interested in developing their didactic competences and teaching English outside the formal education system, for example in language schools or private courses.

Regardless of the chosen specialization, the program includes a wide range of linguistics courses, reflecting the latest developments in the field. It covers, among other topics, neurolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, bilingualism, and theories of second language acquisition. Elective courses include a rich selection of linguistics seminars as well as subject‑specific and MA seminars. Master’s theses completed within the program, in line with its concept and consistent with the curriculum, are written in the discipline of linguistics, in the area of English language learning and teaching. Their topics reflect the broad spectrum of issues in contemporary language education and closely correspond to the research interests of the students.
