Optometria to interdyscyplinarny obszar wiedzy (fizyka, biologia i medycyna), którego głównym przedmiotem zainteresowania jest proces widzenia, a zwłaszcza to wszystko co służy jego ochronie, zachowaniu, usprawnieniu i rozwojowi tego procesu. Optometria jest więc obszarem wiedzy, który koncentruje się na diagnozowaniu i rozwiązywaniu występujących problemów wzrokowych.

Optometrysta to zawód należący do systemu ochrony zdrowia, a osoba wykonująca ten zawód praktykuje w zakresie badania refrakcji (wad wzroku) i zaopatrzenia pacjentów w pomoce wzrokowe. Optometrysta wykonuje pomiary parametrów układu wzrokowego; określa odstępstwa od norm fizjologicznych w celu dobrania, przepisania i wykonania korekcji za pomocą okularów, soczewek kontaktowych lub innych pomocy wzrokowych, a także prowadzi lub nadzoruje rehabilitację układu wzrokowego w celu przywrócenia właściwej sprawności widzenia.
