Major English Studies: Literature and Culture

The Bachelor's degree program in English Studies: Literature and Culture falls within the field of humanities and, as an interdisciplinary course, utilizes tools and research findings primarily within the disciplines of literary studies as well as cultural and religious studies (as a supporting discipline). The curriculum of the English Studies: Literature and Culture program aligns with the latest research in the aforementioned disciplines. Education in this program is closely linked to the academic activities of the English Faculty. The research reflected in the courses covers various forms and phenomena of culture, with a particular emphasis on British, English, Irish, American, and postcolonial literature, cultural theory, film, and theater. Understanding culture in a broad sense, its signs and symbols, and the ability to interpret literary texts are the foundations of "cultural literacy," which becomes an essential factor enabling conscious and fluent navigation in the modern world and a deeper understanding of the processes occurring within it. Knowledge about English-speaking countries, such as the USA, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia is particularly important due to their cultural, economic, and political significance on the international stage. While the focus of studies in English Studies: Literature and Culture is primarily on literature and culture of the English-speaking areas, students can also acquire high language proficiency within our program. This proficiency will allow them, in their professional careers, to articulate in English, both orally and in written formats, on topics related to literature, culture, and, which is equally important, on the socio-political life of the aforementioned countries. The English Studies: Literature and Culture program also aims to equip students with knowledge and skills in communication, including intercultural communication. The proposed program includes courses in knowledge technology and modern humanities, fostering the development of critical, creative, and unconventional thinking skills, essential for functioning in the modern world. Students can choose from a wide range of elective courses, providing them with the flexibility to shape their educational and research path based on individual interests and needs.
