Major Fizyka
Physics is one of the fundamental academic disciplines in the field of natural sciences. Drawing on over 90 years of scientific tradition, the Faculty of Physics at Adam Mickiewicz University offers second-cycle studies in Physics with five specializations:
- General Physics,
- Materials Physics,
- Molecular Biophysics,
- Quantum Information and Spintronics (IKS),
- Physics of Advanced Materials for Energy Processing (PAMEP, taught in English).
These specializations are directly linked to the scientific research conducted at the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Spintronics and Quantum Information at the Faculty of Physics, serving as a response to the growing demand in the job market for highly skilled scientific and technical professionals, particularly in areas where physics intersects with other research disciplines. Upon completing second-cycle studies in Physics, graduates will be well-prepared to pursue doctoral studies and continue their scientific endeavors, as well as to advance their careers in education or industry, especially in sectors such as materials science, energy, biotechnology, and information technology.
The specialization in Quantum Information and Spintronics (IKS) is designed for individuals interested in acquiring in-depth knowledge and skills in the field of new quantum technologies and nanophysics, including quantum information and spintronics. The studies aim to prepare students to tackle new challenges related to the development and implementation of quantum technologies. Education in the IKS specialization includes a range of specialized courses in physics, quantum computing, condensed matter physics, spintronics, magnonics, photonics, as well as experimental and computational methods. Starting from the second semester of studies, students shape their educational path by selecting specialized lectures, monographic lectures, and indicating a mentor and research group with whom they will collaborate. Classes are conducted by specialists engaged in scientific research in collaboration with foreign teams and within grant projects. Due to the international nature of scientific research, a significant portion of the program is conducted in English. The IKS specialization is offered as part of the "Research Intensive Study Programs" initiative of the University's Excellence Initiative, aiming to promote studies combined with innovative scientific research.
The program also offers the opportunity to prepare for a teaching profession through the implementation of a teaching module.

During the second semester, students familiarize themselves with the key concepts in the field of quantum information and spintronics, which are presented in two core courses. Additionally, students learn about the relevant research methods, which are covered in two specialized courses, with each student choosing one lecture, focusing either on quantum information or spintronics. Moreover, in consultation with their mentor, students select a monographic course. The specialized laboratory IKS, where students undertake short internships in research groups at the Institute, introduces students to the specifics of research work and teamwork. During the second semester, students shall specify the topic of their Master thesis.

In the second year of studies, the participation of students in research activities will be intensified. Students prepare their Master thesis based on the results of independently conducted research in a selected research group under the supervision of a mentor. Additionally, students are actively involved in the implementation of research tasks, also within grants and projects run at the Institute, which gives them the opportunity to present the results of their research at scientific conferences or to undertake internships at other scientific institutions.
In the first semester of the second year, the students attend another specialized course, during which they develop their skills in research methods important for quantum information and spintronics. Furthermore, students attend two monographic courses agreed upon with their mentor, as well as one monographic course selected from the general faculty list. Students also participate in the faculty seminars on Modern Trends in Physics Research, during which invited speakers present and discuss current trends and the latest research results in the field of physical sciences.
