Major Etnologia (Cultural Differences and Transnational Processes)

The Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań offers a two-year research-based master's programme in Anthropology. It is a joint master's programme run at AMU in cooperation with the Institutes and Departments of Anthropology of the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain), National University of Ireland Maynooth, Universität Wien (Austria), Université Lumière Lyon II (France), and Universität Bern (Switzerland) under a multilateral agreement signed by AMU in 2019 and prolonged in 2024.

The programme is addressed to undergraduates in ethnology as well as other humanities and social sciences disciplines. The CREOLE study programme emphasises the mobility of students and academic staff, facilitating the flow of knowledge and people among the CREOLE consortium institutions. 

Courses are taught exclusively in English. Students learn about the diversity and complexity of human ways of understanding and experiencing the world from the Institute's faculty and international guests. They spend the first two semesters (I-II) in Poznań and then are encouraged to spend the second year (semesters III and IV) visiting and doing fieldwork at one or two of our partner universities (this mobility is funded under the Erasmus programme). The Institute is visited from teachers from partner universities who teach short courses on the topic of their choice (Teaching Exchanges x 2; teachers from Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology at AMU visit and teach at partner universities). At the end of the second semester, students attend a summer school organised by one of the partner universities for CREOLE students from all seven participating institutions (Intensive Programme). The work on the thesis in the second year is based on individual consultations and tutoring with the supervisor (MA Seminars), but above all is intensive and practical (field research, i.e. Fieldwork/Data Collection in semester III and Writing of the MT in semester IV). In 2020 our teaching programme received the Certificate of Excellence and the highest possible rating (A+) from the Polish Commission for Academic Accreditation.
