Major Biotechnology
In recent years, we have been observing an extremely dynamic development in the field of the so-called medical biotechnology. This field focuses on the application of molecular techniques to the study and modulation of cellular and genetic mechanisms associated with disease. One of the most glaring successes of medical biotechnology in recent years has been the development, implementation and widespread use of immunological cancer therapies and the first drug based on genome editing (Zolgensma, used in the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy through permanent integration of a functional copy of the SMN1 gene into the patient's genome).
According to the current report of the Polish Central Statistical Office, in 2022 internal expenditures incurred by enterprises on biotechnology activities amounted to PLN 1952.7 million and increased by 41.4% year-on-year, and research and development activities in the field of biotechnology were carried out by 234 entities, i.e. 7.8% more than in the previous year. Internal expenditure on R+D activities in the field of biotechnology increased by 20.9% year-on-year. It is forecast that in the coming years the share of R+D activities in the Polish biotechnology sector will gradually increase.
The curriculum in the field of Biotechnology was created in response to the growing needs in the field of educating specialists with very good knowledge and the ability to use modern achievements in the field of molecular biology and medical biotechnology in practice. It is based on the concept of "research direction", where particular emphasis is placed on the formation and development of knowledge, skills and competences necessary to conduct scientific research and research in the sector of modern medical biotechnology. The above assumptions are reflected in the curriculum in the form of subjects such as "Research methodology" or "Commercialization and patenting of research results", the possibility of participation in research projects in Polish and foreign research centers and the use of modern educational methods such as problem-based learning, project teaching, tutoring and mentoring.
The thematic scope of the studies includes familiarizing students with the current state of knowledge and modern methods and technologies of molecular biology as well as genetic and tissue engineering used in medical biotechnology. Thanks to the high individualization of the educational process implemented by a wide range of elective subjects, students have the opportunity to explore issues consistent with their own scientific interests. Graduates of the faculty are prepared to continue their education at the Doctoral School and to work as a researcher in research and R&D institutions in both the public and private sectors.
